10 Greatest Meta Sci-Fi Movies Of All Time
2. Galaxy Quest
For a lot of people, Galaxy Quest is synonymous with meta sci-fi. This beloved 1999 feature follows the exploits of washed up actors mistaken for their space adventuring characters, and recruited on a mission to help downtrodden aliens who've got no concept of fiction, and thus think their old TV series is real.
The film is a love letter to the cast and fandom of Star Trek. The story of actors forever identified with their characters, struggling for work while basking in the adulation of fans at conventions is the story of many members of the Star Trek crew, especially the original cast.
This movie also pays tribute to the dedicated fans of science fiction. It's a movie in which the nerdy kid gets to live the dream of not only learning that the sci-fi he's obsessed with is real, but that it's up to him and his fellow fans to use their nerd knowledge to save the day.
The phenomenal cast includes Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and the late, great Alan Rickman. But what makes this movie truly awesome is the fact that in spite of being hilarious it stands out as one of the great science fiction films and has earned it's place among the honoured classics.
