10 Greatest Sci-Fi Movies Never Made

3. Shadow On The Sun

Stanley Kubrick is considered by many to be one of the greatest directors in the history of film. His resume lists some of the best movies ever made, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining. Unfortunately, for every one of his movies, there are scores he never got around to filming.

One such project was to be Shadow on the Sun, which was based on a BBC radio play of the same name. Like most of his unrealized projects, Kubrick put a lot of effort into research, and his notes on the film suggest it might have been one of his greatest.

The movie would have been similar to the radio play, which was about a meteorite that crashes into Earth, releasing an alien virus to infect humanity. Had he gone forward with the movie, it would have had a similar dark satirical tone found in Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

With Kubrick's passing in 1999, his other projects failed to manifest outside of AI: Artificial Intelligence, which Steven Spielberg directed on Kubrick's request. Someone else may one day take up the Kubrickian task of bringing Shadow on the Sun to life, but thus far, that hasn't happened.
