There was an idea to bring together a remarkable group of people so that when the time came, they could fight the battles that we never could. The Avengers Initiative was something that Nick Fury had in his pocket since the 1990’s, but didn’t act on until Loki attacked SHIELD HQ.

Tony Stark said it himself that the team took a while to get any traction, and they spent most of the time fighting against each other rather than with each other in the early days. However, when they were finally forced onto the same page by the death of Phil Coulson, they truly came together to become the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Iron Man, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye faced a demigod and the greatest alien invasion planet Earth had ever seen, and they knocked it back. When Loki’s scepter then fell into the hands of HYDRA, they destroyed the organization for good.

The team stayed together long enough that when the planet was threatened by a murderous robot and his two powered friends, they were able to emerge victorious just like they did in New York. They may not have been able to avoid civilian casualties completely, but there wouldn’t have even been a planet Earth left had they not been there to save it.
