10 Greatest Villains From Otherwise Disappointing Movies

4. Davy Jones - Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

The Disappointing Movie: Instead of building on the blend of action, drama and comedy from the first film, Dead Man’s Chest simply went bigger with everything, leaving us with a cartoonish performance from Johnny Depp and a narrative that felt too big for the film.

The Great Villain: One of the few good things to come out of this increase in scope was Davy Jones. A bigger budget meant better special effects and put bluntly, Jones looks incredible. The computer generated octopus/lobster-hybrid physique he boasts is both unique and amazingly realized.

Beyond that, the character underneath is almost as captivating. His motivations are simple, convincing and powerful all at one: he did it for love. Yet somewhere along the line, the reasons for his actions have become twisted, and the character has become bitter. His actions towards Jack and company are unnecessarily cruel and ruthless, showing the harrowing emotional transformation he's endured.

Bill Nighy in particular deserves praise for balancing the act of being a tortured soul and a fearsome pirate at the same time. Even though the character occasionally became lost in the shuffle of so much going on, Davy Jones was one of the most redeeming features of the film.
