New Line Cinema/Pixabay

What Actually Happens

After an elaborate series of symbolic murders designed to represent the seven deadly sins, John Doe sends a parcel to Brad Pitt's Detective David Mills. It's recorded delivery, so it must be important.

However, all those packing peanuts don't protect a bottle of fine wine, but rather the severed head of Mills' wife. Unable to contain his rage, the officer shoots Doe dead, completing his so-called 'masterpiece'.

What Should Happen

Mills opens the box with understandable trepidation... only to be greeted by an adorable puppy, which jumps up and licks his face affectionately.

Doe admits the whole thing has been an extravagant game (chaps in the mortuary should have checked harder), with the lolling pooch the prize for solving it.

Also, Kevin Spacey does not appear in the film.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
