10 Hardest To Watch Horror Movie Moments

9. Josh's Achilles Heel - Hostel

Terrifier 2
Screen Gems

There are so many moments from the three (yes, three!) Hostel movies that can be included here, but the one that gets the nod this time out has to be the fate of Derek Richardson's Josh in Eli Roth's first Hostel picture.

While the film initially centred around two American tourists and their excitable Icelandic pal, it's in the torture of Josh that Hostel really set its stall out. Sure, we'd already seen said Icelandic pal Óli (Eyþór Guðjónsson) killed off by that point, but that was done off camera and revealed by a brief glimpse of his decapitated head.

For Josh, his fate showed audiences what Hostel was all about.

Having been drugged, Richardson's character awakens in a dungeon, where he is soon sliced up by a Dutch businessman who drills holes in Josh's knees. The knee-drill part was grim enough, yet the real stomach-turning moment of this sequence is when Josh begs for his life and seems to be granted his freedom.

We see the Dutchman do something out of view before he lets Josh go free. It's only then, as Josh goes to stand up, that we get the close-up realisation that his Achilles tendons have been cut - meaning the base of his foot stays stuck to the floor as the rest of his body pulls away from it.
