10 Hidden Details That Make Horror Movies Even Scarier
1. Halloween - Michael's Background Murders
When it comes to slasher movies, the whole point is showing the kills in as gory detail as possible. Audiences want to see their favourite killers - in this case Michael Myers - ratcheting up a massive kill counts, and horror directors are happy to oblige.
Of course, these figures still have to be scary and mysterious, and the most recent Halloween balanced the spectacle of Michael Myers while keeping him an enigmatic force of evil. You had flashy sequences like the one-take killing spree where The Shape moved from house to house murdering a bunch of innocents, but you also had subtler scares like this one, where you might not have even noticed Michael killing someone in the background.
During the scene early on at the gas station, just after Michael has escaped, you can see him in the background of multiple shots. First he parks up in a stolen car, observing a mechanic. Then you see him stroll across the parking lot out of focus, and finally bludgeoning the mechanic to death outside a window (00:24 below).
It's an entire set-piece, from planning a murder to executing it, all taking place just outside the viewer's focus.
