Michael Mann is another director who went the extra mile to ensure his feature felt as close to real as possible when he was in the process of bringing the final years of infamous bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) to our screens in Public Enemies (2009).

He did this by shooting many of the scenes in actual places where Dillinger had shootouts with the FBI (the Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters) and famously escaped from prison (the old Lake Country Jail in Crown Point).

Yet, he also managed to add another excellent authentic detail when Depp's Dillinger rides off in his getaway vehicle after a bank robbery in the flick. Depp is seen hanging onto the side of a genuine 1932 Studebaker during the scene. But, this wasn't just any old classic antique marched out for a Hollywood biopic. This was a vehicle actually used by Dillinger himself as a getaway car all those years ago and the production managed to loan it from the nearby Historic Auto Attractions museum.

Though you were probably immediately drawn to the sight of a fedora-wearing gun-wielding Depp, once you realise this vehicle was the legitimate car used by Dillinger it's hard to take your eyes off it.
