Set on Quebec, Canada's Red Crow Indian Reservation in 1981, Jeff Barnaby's Blood Quantum is way more than just a zombie movie.

In this 2019 picture, taking centre-stage is a First Nations reserve whose residents are immune to the plague that's spreading across the globe. With the dead reanimating and looking for fresh flesh, the Red Crow residents' safe haven is threatened as others try to seek solace within their walls in an attempt to stay away from the infected.

Extremely well made, Blood Quantum features some impressively gnarly carnage across its 96-minute run time. While the gore is plentiful, it's the greater elements of social commentary which will stay with you long after the film has finished.

The reason why Blood Quantum was set in 1981 was due to that being the year when the Listuguj Mi'gmaq First Nation had its reserves raided by the Quebec police force and local game wardens and fisheries officers. Due to the brutal treatment of the Listuguj people here, they created barricades to their land.

With Blood Quantum, there are clear elements pulled from these real-life happenings - just with an added dose of zombies.
