10 High-Profile 2019 Movies You Should Be Worried About
4. The New Mutants (August 2)
The Movie:
The latest spin-off in the X-Men franchise comes from The Fault in Our Stars' Josh Boone and features a cast of up-and-coming talents, and looks to take the mutant franchise into the realms of the horror genre.
Why You Should Be Worried:
Unfortunately, there's been nothing but bad buzz surrounding The New Mutants.
Originally scheduled for release this April, the date was pushed back ten months to February 2019, and then a further six months to August. That's a hell of a push, and by the time the movie hits theaters, almost two years will have passed since principal photography wrapped in September 2017.
Deadpool and Logan have shown that the X-Men series can thrive outside of the main one, but New Mutants seems to have run into a lot of trouble along the way. Even though Boone had compromised his original vision to appease the studio, Fox then changed their minds and decided they wanted more scary elements added in reshoots that turned out to be hugely extensive.
Depending on who you believe, up to half of the movie had to be re-shot and included the addition of entirely new subplots and characters that even extended to the post-credits scene, with the director essentially getting the chance to make the movie he had wanted to make all along after he'd finished shooting what the studio asked for.
Such public disagreements between director and studio rarely work out well for the finished product, and The New Mutants could easily suffer the fate of many similar projects that have been hacked to pieces in the editing room.
