10 Highest-Grossing Movies Of 2014 (So Far) - Ranked From Worst To Best
7. Mr. Peabody & Sherman ($267m)
It seemed like a gamble to spend $145m on a 3D computer animated feature aimed at children when a large number of the target audience were likely unfamiliar with the source material, but Mister Peabody & Sherman surprised many with a strong showing at the box office. Although the movie suffers from a convoluted plot and a frenetic pace that tests the attention span of both kids and adults, it coasts by on solid voice-work and rich vein of both humor and charm. The real strong point of the movie are the numerous historical references, which manage to be both informative and humorous at the same time and may even teach younger audience members a thing or two. However, there are a huge over-abundance of woeful puns and for such a visually rich movie it feels awfully empty. All in all, a solid if unspectacular animated feature that may have become lost in the shuffle if there were any strong competition at the multiplex. Mr. Peabody & Sherman opened in second place at the domestic box office with $32.2m, but managed to move up to first place in its second weekend. The movie squeaked past $100m in the States, which is a disappointing return for such a heavily-marketed family feature, but decent overseas grosses have seen it cross $250m worldwide. However, a total shy of $300m is still viewed as a relative under-performance given the consistent strength of the animated genre at the box office.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
