10 Highest-Grossing Movies Of 2014 (So Far) - Ranked From Worst To Best
6. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($676.1m)
Marc Webb's 2012 franchise reboot offered up Spider-Man's origin story to cinema audiences for the second time in a decade, and ultimately became the lowest-grossing movie yet featuring the iconic comic book character. However, a $752.2m worldwide total is far from a disaster, and free from the shackles of establishing his take on the mythology the director was free to throw everything including the kitchen sink into the mix for the sequel. It felt as though audiences had already seen half of the movie before it even hit theaters, given the abundance of trailers, clips and TV spots that were released in the marketing blitz in the months before release. Many people thought that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would suffer from the same problems as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3; too many characters, an unfocused tone and a script that reeked of studio interference. They were right. Although Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Dane deHaan are great in their roles and the action scenes are often thrilling, there is far too much going on in this movie. The story is burdened by too many subplots and seems determined to establish a wider universe at the expense of the narrative, which hurts rather than helps the final product. Still, the enduring popularity of Spider-Man saw the movie improve upon its predecessors opening weekend and score one of the biggest domestic debuts of the year with $91.6m. After four weeks in theaters, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has earned almost $700m worldwide, and should ultimately out-earn the previous movie, although tepid reviews and the glut of incoming blockbusters will see the grosses drop significantly in the coming weeks.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
