Led by its bloody animal mask marketing campaign, home invasion slasher You're Next (2011) permeated pop culture before it had ever hit screens. But, given the two years delay between its premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival and its 2013 theatrical release, this shouldn't be too surprising.

Disparate upper-class family the Davisons come together for a weekend reunion on the family's estate, ostensibly to bring the family back together. Though hopes of solidarity seem initially in vain, the sudden arrival of crossbow-wielding, animal-mask-wearing assailants turns the tables, and the Davisons must pull together or die. What neither the Davisons nor the animal invaders count on, however, is Crispin Davison's (AJ Bowen) girlfriend Erin (Sharni Vinson), whose survivalist skills give the invaders a taste of their own medicine.

The invaders turn out to be a little more home-grown than first suspected, however, and in a late-in-the-day twist, Crispin and his brother Felix (Nicholas Tucci) are revealed to have engineered the whole scheme with the intention of killing their parents and winning big on their inheritance.

Though 2019's Ready Or Not treads similar ground in an, albeit, far more light-hearted fashion, You're Next's dedication to sheer, blood-curdling horror sets it apart from other similar fare.
