The genre of Horror Western is very rare, and very niche, but the popularity of Bone Tomahawk paved the way for future western horror movies such as 2019’s The Wind, and 2020’s The Pale Door. When it was released, critics likened Bone Tomahawk to a Sergio Leone film as far as its very serious tone, gripping character development and ‘slow burn’ pacing was concerned. However, Bone Tomahawk featured a scene which Sergio Leone would never have even attempted.

Bone Tomahawk is a story about a group of men who go hunting for creatures called ‘Troglodytes’: an indigenous tribe of cannibals who kill people and then use their victim’s bones to modify their own bodies. In order to accentuate this, Bone Tomahawk features a grotesque scene where one of the protagonists – Nick – is subject to a rather horrible death.

When the group gets captured by Troglodytes, Nick is the first to die. He is dragged from his cell before being stripped, scalped, and bisected with the titular ‘bone tomahawk’ before his flesh is consumed by the indigenous cannibals.

It’s a very long, very drawn out sequence that highlights the vicious and horrific nature of the Troglodyte clan, and it stays in the mind’s eye long after the film has finished. Bone Tomahawk is a gem of a hybrid horror movie, and this scene cements it as such.
