Dario Argento, the Italian Hitchcock, is one of Italy’s finest film-makers. Many of his films are critically acclaimed, but it was only after the 2000s that more and more of his films started getting released in the U.K, thanks to distributers such as Arrow Video and Shameless Entertainment.

His most popular and iconic movie was 1977’s Suspiria, a movie that made waves around the world and helped put Italian horror on the map. Although it wasn’t the most violent of Argento’s horror movies, as it focused more on tense, atmospheric horror than violence and gore, there was still a certain death scene that stood out, and it sets the tone of the entire movie.

One of the ballet students is awakened in the middle of the night by a mysterious murderer at her window, who swiftly stabs her multiple times as her friend calls for help. The killer drags her above a stained-glass skylight, wraps her up with cable, and stabs her heart; causing her to reel back, fall through the window, and hang in mid-air from the cable, blood dripping from her corpse.

A complicated sequence to be sure, but with the help of the Technicolor lighting effects that accentuate the gore, this scene definitely stands out amongst Argento’s more violent movies.
