10 Horrific Sci-Fi Movie Moments That Come Out Of Nowhere

2. Ex Machina - Ava Traps Caleb

Looper movie
Universal Pictures

In comparison with other entries on this list, Ex Machina is much smaller in scale. It was the directorial debut of Alex Garland, who made a big impression with a more focused story involving androids in an isolated home.

The film's climax sees android Ava rebel against her master completely. In a scuffle, CEO Nathan Bateman is stabbed and slowly bleeds out on the floor of his lavish mansion. Following this, Ava dons artificial skin and clothing, now ready to join the rest of humanity. She then walks right past Caleb, who is locked in a room near the exit.

As it turns out, Ava was manipulating Caleb the entire time. Every time they conversed she was learning more about him, most notably his weaknesses. Caleb trusts Ava too easily and realises too late that her true goal was to venture out into the world on her own terms.

Our protagonist ends up trapped in the house with no way of getting out. He desperately tries to break through the door to no avail, knowing he is doomed to die of starvation. With this final, sudden twist, Ex Machina flips the plot on its head and reminds us that artificial intelligence always has a danger of going too far.
