10 Horror Anthologies You Must See Before You Die
1. Trick ‘R Treat
What’s better than a horror anthology? A horror anthology set at Halloween, of course, and Michael Dougherty’s directorial debut Trick ‘r Treat celebrates the horror fan’s favourite holiday in all its spooky glory.
Set in a seemingly picture-perfect mid-American town, Dougherty’s deliciously dark humoured film features five interwoven tales that unfold over the course of one particularly eventful All Hallows’ Eve following characters including a school principal who moonlights as a murderous psychopath, a group of trick-or-treaters playing a cruel prank on a classmate and a grouchy old dude whose murky past and contempt for the holiday come back and bite him on the behind.
Overseeing the festive revelry is the cute-yet-creepy Sam – an impish little demon clad in footie pyjamas with a burlap sack for a head who’s in town to make sure everybody abides by the rules of Halloween and dish out gruesome punishments if they don’t.
Tongue in cheek without sacrificing on the gore or creep factor, it’s not too much of an exaggeration to call Trick ‘r Treat the best horror anthology in recent memory.
Standout Segment:
’Surprise Party’ stars Anna Paquin as a seemingly sweet and virginal college girl out with her friends dressed in typical slutty Halloween attire (theme: sexy fairy tale characters) who is looking for a guy to make her ‘first time’ special. Things are far from what they seem, however, in this delightfully sly riff on Little Red Riding Hood.
