10 Horror Films Set At Halloween To Scare You Perfectly In The Mood

5. Dark Night Of The Scarecrow

Trick R Treat
CBS

If you let the fact that it's a made for TV movie keep you from watching Dark Night of the Scarecrow, you're really missing out. Despite being about a killer scarecrow, the film is actually far more touching, atmospheric and well written than you'd expect from what sounds like a crappy B-movie.

A mentally challenged man, Bubba, is blamed for the injury of a young girl that he had nothing to do with. The mob of angry townspeople find and murder him while he's disguised as a scarecrow, and when they discover he was completely innocent, they plant a pitchfork on him to make it look like self defense. Soon, a series of murders begin, and it appears Bubba may have returned to exact his revenge.

Like A Nightmare on Elm Street, the movie plays with the consequences of people taking justice into their own hands, although in this case, Bubba did nothing wrong at all. The structure is similar to a slasher film, but it thrives on subtly over crazy kills, partially just because it aired on CBS. For a TV movie, the acting is quite good, and it has a really eerie tone to boot.

A Halloween party plays a role and the excellent climax takes place in a pumpkin patch, so this October is the perfect time to give it a chance.
