10 Horror Films That Aren't Talked About Enough
1. Next Of Kin (1982)
Linda inherits Montclare, a retirement home, from her late mother. Shortly after moving in, she discovers her mother's diary, which details events that mirror Linda's own unsettling observations of Montclare. What follows is a tense slow-burn, building up to a big, explosive climax.
1982 was a fantastic year for horror cinema: it's the year that gifted us Poltergeist, Creepshow and The Thing, just to name a few. This moody, long-forgotten Ozploitation pic, for whatever reason, seemed to have gotten lost in the crowd, and remained buried in relative obscurity for many years.
Thankfully, the horror community is ever so gradually beginning to rediscover this lost should-have-been classic, though there is still some way to go until it receives the exposure it truly deserves. It wasn't until Quentin Tarantino drew attention to it that people started to take notice of just how good of a film it actually is.
The atmosphere and overall feel of Next of Kin has frequently been compared to The Shining; a compliment which should be enough to convince you. Plus a young John Jarratt is in it, so there's that.
