10 Horror Films Where Only One Person Dies
3. Happy Death Day (2017)
Happy Death Day introduces us to college student Tree who seems to be stuck in a time-loop wherein she is murdered by a masked killer again and again. Hoping to end her torment, she vows to discover her slayer's identity.
This one counts, okay? Star Jessica Rothe may have 11 separate death scenes in the film, but technically she survives them all to become the ultimate final girl. So, spoiler alert, the only one meeting their maker is our baby-faced killer when they are finally unmasked.
Happy Death Day plays with slasher film conventions in every way it can, not least by having a reasonably high kill count with only one primary victim.
Protagonist Tree also goes through a fascinating transformation as she gets wise to her situation. Beginning as a somewhat ditsy blonde, she falls victim to numerous slasher tropes that spell her doom. She eventually becomes a fearless warrior on a mission. It is empowering to watch this within one film as opposed to over a series of movies and Jessica Rothe handles the material with ease.
Director Chris Landon handles the concept brilliantly with the perfect balance of horror, comedy and meta humor. It's easy to see why genre fans hailed Happy Death Day a modern slasher classic with "Baby Face" becoming instantly iconic.
