10 Horror Monsters That Became The Star Of The Show

Jason Voorhees is Friday the 13th.

It’s a strange quirk of the Friday the 13th franchise that the thing that defines it so strongly wasn’t part of the original movie, beyond a last-minute jump scare to give the audience a final thrill. Jason is definitely winning on scant screen time in the first instalment. He’s also winning at the box office, with Friday the 13th being one of the most financially successful horror franchises of all time.

People love Jason. His mask and his machete are inseparable from the movies, but it took a while for his iconic look to come together. In part one he was a slimy lake monster, who literally popped up for a few seconds. In part two he had a bag on his head. In part three he finally found his face and it’s stuck on him ever since.

There have been periods where an instalment of Friday the 13th has been released every year. With each one being pretty much identical to the last. The formula never changes, the story never advances, the characters are never developed. Sometimes it’s at the lake, sometimes it’s in space, but it’s all the same, Jason smashes and maims and we can’t get enough.

It’s the same every time and that’s fine. We don’t want it to change. We just want more Jason.
