10 Horror Monsters That Became The Star Of The Show

3. "Bruce" The Shark

JAWS 3D

It only took one movie for the shark, which was hardly in the movie at all, to become the star.

With an incomplete script, a cast that didn’t come together until the eleventh hour, a busted shark, a skyrocketing budget and a shoot that went more than three months over schedule, as well as a seasick crew, a drunk cast and a literal sinking ship, the entire production was a nightmare from start to finish.

Spielberg and the producers originally wanted to train a real shark for the movie. Realising the insanity of this, a full-sized mechanical, seafaring prop was built. A feat that was just about safer, a bit less insane and only just possible.

As a result of the constant issues with the prop, nicknamed ‘flaws’ by the crew, the shark only makes scant appearances on screen. But this lack of screen time played to the idea that the greatest fear is in the unseen and unknown.

In the case of Jaws, that couldn’t have been truer. The shark made a massive impact.

And people kept coming to see it over and over again. In three sequels we saw more and more of the shark. Not to mention a glut of imitators.

‘Flaws’ could have ruined Spielberg’s career, if Jaws hadn’t turned out as one of the greatest movies ever made.
