6. The Cube's Purpose - Cube

Vincenzo Natali's Kafkaesque thriller centres around a group of strangers who find themselves trapped inside a booby-trapped labyrinth. While navigating through the cube-shaped maze, the ensemble deliberates on who put them there and why. Although some elements are given away, it feels a full explanation will be offered at some point, but by the time the credits roll, the truth behind the labyrinth is still very hush-hush.

The prequel, Cube Zero, mightn't have spilled all the beans, but it did impart a few juicy facts. The Cubes (yes, there's more than one) were built by a weapons company called Izon, possibly to test the efficiency of new armaments and technology.

A Cube's captives tend to be death row inmates or people who pose a political threat to the organisation. If Izon employees become problematic, they're lobotomised and placed in the Cube, with this revelation indicating the last survivor of the first film, Kazan, was an ex-employee since his intellect was heavily impaired.

Sadly, it's disclosed in Cube Zero that there's no true way to escape the Cube. If a participant finds the "exit," they're immediately disposed of. Depressingly, this detail indicates Kazan didn't make it out alive in the original, as was presumed.
