4. Grace Marshall - The Lodge

Sony Pictures Releasing

From Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, The Lodge ends with traumatised Grace Marshall (Riley Keough) fatally shooting her fiancé after believing she and her inner circle are in Purgatory.

While it's Grace's faith that leads to this tragedy, it's not entirely her fault that The Lodge gets to this shocking conclusion.

This 2020 release earlier showcases how, as a child, Grace was the sole survivor of an extreme Christian cult's mass suicide. Tormented to this day by the sermons of her deceased father, Grace relies on medication to keep the memories of her past at bay.

When Keough's character attempts to bond with her beau's children in a lodge during the festive period - fiancé Richard busy with work - things take a troubling turn as Grace's medication, her clothes, her belongings and her dog all go missing, with the power likewise going out.

Convinced by the two children that all three of them died from carbon monoxide poisoning and are in Purgatory - complete with one of the children hanging himself and surviving to prove this - Grace has a breakdown.

It's revealed how little sh*ts Richard and Mia had faked all of this and drugged Grace, using her previous beliefs to punish her. Still, it's too late now, for Grace is convinced that, yes, they are all in Purgatory - to the extent that, when Richard returns, she shoots him to prove her point.
