It may be almost half a century old, but George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead has lost none of its literal bite. When a group of strangers find themselves being attacked by resurrected cannibals, they take shelter in an isolated cabin. One member of the group, Ben, takes charge, ordering the others to barricade the doors and windows, to stop the undead horde from breaking in.

Despite his best efforts, the night concludes with everyone in Ben's party being killed, save for himself. The following morning, an armed posse arrive in the area, killing the majority of the zombies. When Ben looks outside, he's mistaken for a ghoul and is shot dead.

Now, there are so many reasons why this death is so harrowing. If Ben or the posse took an extra second to gauge the situation, no innocent blood would've been spilled. The fact that Ben bent over backwards to protect his group from the brain-gobbling zombies, only to be killed due to a misunderstanding is heart-wrenching.

But do you know what the worst part is? Nobody acknowledges the shooter's mistake. Because Ben's body was thrown on a bonfire immediately after, nobody realised there was no need to kill him.
