10 Horror Movie Characters Who Were Their Own Worst Enemy

9. Regan MacNeil -- The Exorcist (1973)

Timecrimes Movie
Warner Bros. Pictures

William Friedkin's The Exorcist has frequently been touted as one of the scariest films of all time, due in no small part to the chilling performance at its core.

14-year-old Linda Blair played Regan MacNeil, the little girl from the 'burbs who succumbs to the demon Pazuzu and begins acting out in more ways than your average teenager. She urinates on the carpet during one of her mother's (Ellen Burstyn) polite society parties, tells an astronaut he's 'going to die up there', and crawls down the stairs backwards.

But far worse than hurting feelings and scaring the living bejesus out of others, Regan is first and foremost a hazard to herself. She revolves her own head 180 degrees, refuses to eat and, in a scene so viscerally shocking none of us will forget it until the day we die, stabs herself between the legs with a crucifix and shoves her mother's face in the blood. By cursing, attacking and killing those who would seek to help her, Regan almost seals her fate for good and, were it not for the timely intervention of the Catholic clergy, that would have been that.
