10 Horror Movie Creature Features That Broke All The Rules

9. Jeepers Creepers

The Troll Hunter
United Artists

Directed by disgraced Clownhouse helmer/ name to not research Victor Salva, Jeepers Creepers is a 2001 horror which went on to spawn a successful string of sequels.

The tense, sparse flick follows a pair of bickering siblings who are almost run off the road by a lunatic in a tow truck, thus prompting a drawn-out car chase which takes up much of the undeniably effective thriller's short runtime. So far, so normal. So where does the rule breaking come in?

Well, it's not many movie monsters that dress in Stetsons and drive a pick up truck—when not flying around on their batwings. Yes, Jeepers Creepers takes its sweet time building up to the reveal of its antagonist, but it's for good reason.

Most viewers presume they're watching a fairly standard slasher in the vein of Roadgames wherein the human villain happens to drive a recognizable hunk of junk around. So when the audience finally sees the creeper and it's revealed to be a reptilian monster with massive wings and Predator-style fangs, it makes for a pretty wild genre switch.

This bizarre Dracula-meets-Duel mash up of this series does leave a few questions unanswered though. Who taught him to drive?
