10 Horror Movie Creature Features That Broke All The Rules

8. Pitch Black

The Troll Hunter
Universal

Directed by A Perfect Getaway creator David Twohy, Pitch Black was a thrilling sci-fi horror from 2000 which flipped the script of its bigger budget predecessors in the sub genre such as Alien and The Thing.

Stranding a set of mismatched survivors on a desolate desert planet where night lasts a lot longer than on earth and brings with it a flood of monsters who can only attack under cover of darkness, this intense flick remains underrated and went on to facilitate the creation of the Chronicles of Riddick series.

The Vin Diesel vehicle features a strong, no nonsense heroine played by Silent Hill heroine Radha Mitchell who proves to be cunning and resilient through the film's runtime. Resourceful and daring, this Ripley alike is the obvious candidate for anti-heroine of the flick—which meant audiences were blind-sided when she ended up brutally killed seconds before the closing credits, skewered by hubris.

It's a devastating and unexpected twist, and it's one which solidifies this flick as a subversive entry into the monster movie canon.
