5. Oculus - Kaylie Russell
Oculus comes up a lot in these lovely horror lists, and I'm not going to apologise for it because it's an excellent movie that deserves more attention. So here it is again! Go and watch Oculus!
The story is one that sees siblings Kaylie and Tim attempt to document the effects of a cursed mirror, one that influenced their parents deaths when Kaylie and Tim were just children. Their resulting efforts are a tense hour and a half of hallucinations, strange occurrences, and mind manipulation from the Lasser Glass, with more than one death born from its trickery. Kaylie stabs a vision of her mother in the next, for example, before realising it was actually her visiting fiancee coming to check on her.
By far the worst is Kaylie's death at the end of the movie, where she's tricked into looking into the mirror as Tim activates the killswitch: a booby trap designed to smash the glass should they become compromised by its spooky abilities.
And since we don't actually see Kaylie until she's got the mechanism hanging out her broken neck, it's absolutely one of the best surprise deaths dropped in a horror movie.
