The Happening is considered to be the worst film directed by M. Night Shyamalan (which is pretty impressive considering he also made The Last Airbender). As terrible as The Happening is, the premise is fascinating. In the opening scene, we learn there is a mysterious forcing causing people to take their lives. It's genuinely horrifying to watch seemingly normal people voluntarily plunge off buildings or shoot themselves dead.

However, all the potential terror is sucked out of the movie the instant you learn the origin of The Happening. It is unveiled that all plant life has evolved to spew a toxin that overwhelms people with suicidal tendencies. This idea is so silly, it automatically makes every death afterward laughable.

As the movie progresses, all the suicides seem to get more and more preposterous. Even if the premise was better, watching a zookeeper feed himself to a lioness or a groundskeeper allowing himself to be run over by a lawnmower still comes across as unintentionally comedic.

Moments like this are so funny that viewers still debate to this day whether The Happening was supposed to be a genuine horror or a throwback to cheesy, non-sensical B-movies of the 1960s.
