10 Horror Movie Directors That Quit The Genre
1. Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead 2013)
Evil Dead remaker Fede Alvarez may be the most impressive horror abandone-er on this list, as the filmmaker managed to gradually wriggle his way out of the genre without ever losing any of its urgent intensity.
Arriving in cinemas in 2013, the director's Evil Dead remake managed the almost impossible task of doing justice to the original by stripping away any vestiges of humour, upping the gore, and adding a New French Extremity-inspired touch of endurance horror to the flick. The creepy demon designs were still there, sure, but now they were joined by gruesome sequences of self mutilation which left even fans of the original cringing in horror.
This wasn't an easy act to follow but Alvarez pulled an impressive about face with 2016's Don't Breathe, a tense home invasion thriller which saw a trio of youths break into the home of a blind, and seriously disturbed, military veteran. As gripping and grim as the Evil Dead remake, this one wasn't a supernatural horror strictly speaking, meaning Alvarez was able to expand out into thriller filmmaking.
From there, the director went on to helm the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo reboot, The Girl In the Spider's Web, in 2018.
