10 Horror Movie Monsters You Were Completely Unprepared For
5. The Monsters - Arcadian
Nicolas Cage gave such a memorable performance in 2024's Longlegs, it's easy to forget the Face/Off star appeared in another horror that same year called Arcadian.
It bombed spectacularly at the box office but the post-apocalyptic thriller should be commended for its monster designs. The photosensitive adversaries are built up gradually, with only parts of them glimpsed at for the first hour or so. These nocturnal cretins are hyped so well, it would've been disappointing if they had a run-of-the-mill design.
On the contrary, these monsters look incredibly unique. With their elongated limbs, shaggy body, and distorted humanoid appearance, these freaks of nature should scare the hell out of anybody.
Director, Ben Brewer, drew inspiration from many sources, including praying mantises, water bears, and Bigfoot. In an interview with IGN, Brewer admitted the beasties' spaced-out teeth were modelled off Goofy.)
However, the most petrifying thing isn't the creatures' appearance but their jerky movements. As they close in on their prey, the monsters vigorously snap their jaws back, emitting a horrible slurping sound.
Even though Nicolas Cage is normally the most entertaining aspect of any feature he stars in, these nightmare-inducing savages absolutely steal the show.
