10 Horror Movie Monsters You Were Completely Unprepared For

4. The Fairies - The Hallow

Despite the fact fairies were originally depicted as menacing entities in European folklore, they're often portrayed as whimsical and enchanting creatures. Even though 2015's The Hallow emphasises fairies harbour malicious intent towards all of mankind, you may assume these magical critters have some resemblance to their regular depiction.

But nothing could be further from the truth. Instead of looking like pointy-eared diminutive humanoids, these fairies are grotesque aberrations, composed of fungal growths, rotting flesh, and a bark-like texture. Not only does this make the fairies look disturbing as hell, they perfectly blend into the foliage where they reside, allowing them to sneak up on their victims without being detected.

Rather than relying on jump scares, the creatures often emerge silently from the darkness. Because of this, their prey are unaware of the fairies' presence until it's too late.

Although the fairies have a terrific design, it could've been ruined if the filmmakers relied on excessive CGI. Fortunately, the eldritch monsters are brought to life with a mix of practical effects and animatronics, so they come across as living, breathing organisms, which makes them far scarier.
