10 Horror Movie Monsters You Were Completely Unprepared For
6. Gwoemul - The Host
In Bong Joon-Ho's kaiju flick, the residents of Seoul find themselves besieged by an enormous mutant called Gwoemul. Gwoemul has a fantastically unique look, resembling a monstrously sized fang-bearing tadpole.
However, it's not Gwoemul's design that leaves the biggest impact but the way the leviathan is introduced into the story. The film opens with a seemingly ordinary sequence, with people hanging out along the Han River.
There's a sense of mild unease when the civilians spot a dark figure hanging under a bridge. After a moment , the entity plops into the water below.
Just as it looks like the creature has vanished, it reemerges on land. Rather than bursting onto the scene, Gwoemul appears in the distance, so it's hard to make out at first. By the time the onlookers realise they're in serious danger, it's too late as Gwoemul begins attacking everyone in sight.
Gwoemul's first appearance is so out of the blue, the audience is left as disoriented and confused as the characters.
Although the Korean creature feature has plenty of gripping moments, nothing compares to Gwoemul's abrupt debut.
