10 Horror Movie Protagonists Who Kind Of Deserved To Die

2. Sergeant Howie – The Wicker Man

Drag Me To Hell
British Lion Films

For a supposedly intelligent man Sergeant Howie sure is stupid. Not only does he unwisely travel to a remote island to investigate the case of a girl who’s been missing unreported for months, once he arrives he doesn’t think to leave for backup even when the islanders start demonstrating some rather weird behaviour like using toads to cure coughs instead of modern medicine and teaching their kids dirty songs about phallic maypoles and the like.

It’s not just all those missed opportunities to get off the paganistic hellhole that is Summerisle either: it’s Howie’s personality too. He’s a bit of an insufferable, preachy fool and his devout belief in his own Christian faith but dismissal of the pagan islanders’ borders on religious bigotry. Even if they are trying to kill him.

As for that godawful Nicolas Cage remake? That whole movie and everybody involved in it should be put to death for crimes against cinema.
