10 Horror Movie Remakes Better Than You Remember
1. Maniac (2012)
Maniac is built around an interesting gimmick: what if a whole slasher movie was shot from the POV of the killer? It's a trope that was everywhere in the early days of the sub-genre, so it's a surprise that it took so long to become the basis of an entire horror movie.
Thankfully, the director here makes it work, grounding the audience in the psyche of a disturbed serial killer.
Elijah Wood always fits too comfortably in killer roles - whether it's in Maniac or something like Sin City - and the former Frodo actor brings an unassuming sinister aura to the villain here, even if you only see brief flashes of his reflection.
He also nails the more vulnerable parts of his titular maniac, offering us quick glimpses of the shred of humanity left in him that ultimately goes a long way in elevating what could have been a one-dimensional slasher flick.
It's not perfect by any means, but it boasts more interesting ideas than most remakes, and in many ways adds depth and creativity to the original.
