10 Horror Movie Remakes You Must Never Watch

Are there ANY good horror remakes?

When any film becomes iconic, it's inevitable that a studio will remake it, hoping (but probably failing) to recreate that success. Because cinema-goers are drawn to the familiar, it makes sense why people would flock to see another rendition of a recognised and beloved property.

Now, it goes without saying that this practice rarely works out. Sadly, terrible reimaginings are more commonplace when it comes to horror. Because the genre is already pretty derivative, it's hard to craft a remake that feels like a real movie rather than a retread. More often that not, these horror flicks try so hard to replicate famous scenes or outdo the scares of its predecessor, they forget to tell a compelling narrative.

Of course, making a great horror reboot isn't impossible. The Mummy, Dracula, and Frankenstein have all been successfully recreated for the big screen. Later renditions of The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and The Fly managed to surpass the originals too.

But we're not going to be delving into anything of that caliber. Instead, we'll be looking at the lowest of the low. If you were intending to check out these films because you were a fan of the original, don't waste your time.

10. Poltergeist

Martyrs remake
20th Century Fox

The Poltergeist remake is so forgettable, you probably forgot it existed until now. Even if you saw it, it doesn't leave any impression because it cannot hold a candle to Tobe Hooper's classic.

You know what's weird? You can tell this film isn't going to work based entirely on the poster, which depicts a clown doll. This image is a nod to the scene in the original Poltergeist where Robbie is strangled by a possessed doll.

But because this remake uses the creepy clown to sell its movie, it's basically telling us it's going to copy the best bits of its forerunner, rather than try anything new. All the key scenes are recreated including the doll, the attacking trees, the static hand, the child being sucked into the tv, and the iconic line, "They're here." The only difference is that none of these scenes are scary since we've literally seen them all before.

Sam Rockwell and Jared Harris do their best to keep the story grounded but it's not enough. Due to the unconvincing special effects and superficial scares, the 2015 Poltergeist is a waste of effort.
