Oldboy opens with businessman, Dae-su getting kidnapped on the street, where he's transported into a sealed room. When he learns his wife has been murdered, Dae-su attempts suicide. However, his captor resuscitates Dae-su, to prolong his suffering.

15 years later, Dae-su is released from his single-room prison with little explanation. After following a series of clues, Dae-su tracks down his captor - his former classmate, Lee Woo-jin.

Lee reminds Dae-su that he caught Lee having an incestuous relationship with his sister while in high school. After Dae-su told his friends, the gossip was too much for Lee's sibling, compelling her to end her life. When Lee explains these details, it's understandable why he dedicated his life to ensure Dae-su suffered.

However, Lee isn't done. The criminal mastermind then reveals he manipulated Dae-su to have sex with Mi-do, with Dae-su oblivious she was his own daughter. Realising he's committed incest, Dae-su is left inconsolable. To ensure Lee doesn't tell Mi-do, Dae-su chops off his tongue.

As Lee walks away, Dae-su presses a button, which he believes will kill him. Instead, it plays a recording of Dae-su and Mi-do having sex, humiliating him further. When Dae-su meets Mi-do later, she confesses her feelings to him. Knowing the truth will crush her, Dae-su reluctantly accepts her love.

Although Lee killed himself immediately after dropping this bombshell, there's no question he successfully destroyed Dae-su's life beyond measure.
