Carrie opens with our titular character experiencing her first period, which compels her classmates to mercilessly mock her. Shortly after, Carrie White notices she's developed telekinetic powers, which her mother mistakes for witchcraft.

After the school heartthrob Tommy asks her to the prom, Carrie believes her luck is finally turning around. When she and Tommy are crowned the Prom Queen and King, Carrie experiences true happiness for the first time in her life.

Unbeknownst to Sissy Spacek's character, her crowning was orchestrated by school bully Chris and her boyfriend Billy. While Carrie is on stage, Chris pulls a rope, spilling a bucket of blood onto White. Unable to control her rage, Carrie uses her powers to kill everyone in the room.

Sure, Carrie may have overreacted (just a bit), though it's hard not to be on her side. Many students knew about the prank, but did nothing to avert it. When Carrie was drenched in blood, nobody tried to help her. After the bucket landed on Tommy's head, seemingly killing him, the crowd laughed.

What makes Carrie's massacre more gratifying is how it culminates with her killing Chris, Billy, and her mother - the three people most responsible for making her life a misery.
