In Us, Adelaide's family are at their vacation home when they're attacked by doppelgängers called The Tethered. After the family escape, Adelaide discovers people across the city are being killed by their doubles.

During the climax, Adelaide's literal other half, Red, divulges that government officials created clones of each American decades ago, hoping to control them. When the experiment failed, the clones were abandoned underground.

It is also revealed during this confrontation that Adelaide is a Tethered, not Red. Adelaide swapped with Red as a child, stealing her life, while Red was abandoned underground. Driven by rage over the years, Red was inspired to rally the Tethered to take to the surface and slaughter their counterparts.

After killing Red, Adelaide assumes the invasion has been averted. But as she drives off, the final shot reveals Tethereds stretching for miles across the city, indicating Red has already put her plan into action.

Even if these duplicates were defeated by humanity, Red accomplished her goal, since she exposed the evils of the government on a global scale. She didn't witness her dream come true, but Red died contented, knowing she destroyed the world that Adelaide fought so hard to be a part of.
