There are plenty of complex characters throughout film history, and arguably the horror genre in particular, that sit in the grey area between good and bad. The extreme circumstances of some of the more violent or disturbing stories can easily push someone from the former to the latter.

This is the case with Carrie White, who was memorably brought to life by Sissy Spacek in Brian De Palma's iconic adaptation in 1976. To begin with, Carrie was a perfectly innocent girl who was the subject of abuse at home and at school, but once her telekinetic powers developed, it would be hard to argue that she did not become a villain in her own right.

It feels unfair to call her that, as she was unequivocally a victim, but some of the greatest bad guys in history came with sympathetic back stories. Carrie ultimately became a supernaturally powered killer, even if it initially came from a place of self-defence.

The most important kills to Carrie's name, however, were to the three who antagonised her more than anyone else - namely her school bullies, Chris and Billy, and of course her mother, all of which were killed by Carrie in various ways across different cinematic versions of the story.
