Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon stars Angela Goethals as Taylor, a documentary filmmaker in a world where famous horror movie killers are real people.

Her subject is the titular Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel), who is in training to emulate his idols. Cue some darkly funny mockumentary-style montages of Vernon planning his killing spree, devising his backstory, and doing cardio.

The film is a fantastic take on the slasher genre and its many tropes, presenting them in a new light without ever making fun of them. It's even got appearances from legends like Robert Englund and Kane Hodder.

In the end, Vernon's plans are stopped when Taylor and her crew decide that they cannot sit idly by and watch him commit a massacre. Taylor manages to defeat Vernon by crushing his head in an apple press, violating some serious rules of filmmaking objectivity in the process.

If Vernon had simply gone on his rampage without agreeing to be filmed, then he'd have gotten away with it. Instead, he let his ego get the better of him, which is a shame.

Actually, it saved a lot people's lives, so it's not that much of a shame.
