10 Horror Movies Critics Were WAY Too Harsh On

3. A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge

New Line Cinema had a lot riding on the sequel to A Nightmare On Elm Street and it soared at the box office, despite dreadful reviews. The unintentional subtext, however, would give the film a unique legacy. The openly gay star of the film, Mark Patton would later say: "I may be the first male scream queen... " and Nightmare 2 gained a reputation as the first, albeit closeted, gay horror flick.

Kim Newman begrudgingly managed one star: "Possibly the lamest of all the sequels, although Five and Six later set the bar particularly low." He's right; the acting is wooden, the script feels like a first draft and the effects are considerably short of special but there is so much fun here to savour, intentionally or not.

In the superb documentary Never Sleep Again, actors and filmmakers point out the homoeroticism that is plastered throughout the movie, including a dream sequence where our hero Jesse ends up in a downtown S & M bar, followed by a bizarre towel whipping scene in the school's gym shower block. Newman goes on to say: "... the film seems to be an allegory for Jesse’s sexual confusion, as he repeatedly turns away from the willing girl to get close to half-naked guys."

Robert England is still the star of the show and fully appreciates the film's quirky legacy: "There's always a dance with Freddy, always a seduction..." ANOES 2 may not be perfect, but it is fabulous.
