10 Horror Movies Monsters That Just DIDN'T Work

Movies like Them! popularised the idea of humanity fighting off gigantic creepy-crawlies. In creature features like these, miniatures, puppets, and trick photography are used to make the tiny insects look enormous.

However, a different approach was taken for The Giant Spider Invasion. To bring the colossal arachnids to life, spider costumes were placed over Volkswagen Beetles, which were then driven around by stunt drivers. The limbs of the spiders were operated from within the vehicle to give the impression that it's crawling around.

Now, it goes without saying that this thinking-outside-the-box idea didn't work out. Rather than looking like gargantuan monsters, the spiders resemble fluffy parade floats. Sometimes, the spiders are moving around when none of their legs are touching the ground, so it's obvious there's an automobile inside piloting them.

The spider design itself can be cool (especially their creepy mandibles), but it's impossible to take it seriously watching these monsters driving after their prey.

Though the puppetry from old-school B-movies like Them! may be dated by today's standards, it's a work of art compared to The Giant Spider Invasion's laughable effects.
