10 Horror Movies Test Audiences Loved (And Everyone Else Hated)

5. Fantasy Island

The marketing for 2020's horror-themed reboot of Fantasy Island actually suggested it'd be a lot of knowing fun, and if that wasn't enough, test screenings apparently fared well too.

Shortly before the film's release, director Jeff Wadlow noted that Blumhouse mega-producer Jason Blum made the decision to cut the film down from an R-rating to a PG-13 after seeing the test audience's positive reaction.

Between this and Blum's overall feeling that the movie was just a few trims away from being PG-13 anyway, it seemed evident that the film would play extremely well with teenage audiences if they'd actually be able to see it. And so, Fantasy Island was edited down to PG-13.

And though it turned an easy profit on its mere $7 million budget, Wadlow's movie was demolished by critics, who gave it a mere 8% approval rating, while receiving five Razzie nominations (including Worst Picture), and nabbing an unimpressive "C-" CinemaScore from audiences.
