10 Horror Movies That Almost Had TERRIBLE Titles

9. Head Cheese - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Unfriended Cybernatural
Bryanston Pictures

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a title so perfect for this franchise it's almost chuckle-inducing. It covers the setting, weapon of choice, and the fact you're about to see more blood than you would in an abattoir. But it took a few trial runs to get there.

The film cycled through many potential titles, including Saturn in Retrograde, Stalking Leatherface, and Leatherface. Still, Head Cheese was by far the worst of them all.

This title comes from the disturbing scene where the characters pick up a hitchhiker (eventually revealed to be Nubbins Sawyer), and he describes the grim process of making head cheese, a sort of meat jelly meal made by boiling animal parts.

There is at least some context in the film to help this title make sense, but imagine hearing it in 1974 with no knowledge of this gruesomeness meat type. Would you think it was a violent horror or goofy comedy flick? Either way, it's good Tobe Hooper didn't go with this title.
