10 Horror Movies That Deserve A Reboot
8. One Missed Call (2008)
The J-horror boom of the late '90s and early 2000s introduced the world to some truly chilling titles. Hollywood remakes were inevitable, though the results were mixed. Gore Verbinski's The Ring was a terrifying retelling of the original, but other attempts were less successful. One of the weakest was Éric Valette's One Missed Call, which currently sits at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Based on the novel by Yasushi Akimoto, the original film saw college student Yumi uncover a ghostly mystery when her friends die after receiving ominous voice messages that predict their deaths. Filled with unsettling scares and a central plot that's as gripping as it is tragic, this film was a solid example of J-horror cinema.
While the American version stuck to the same general plot, its decision to replace the haunting imagery of the original with abysmal CGI effects and lifeless performances sapped out all the terror.
With smartphones being an even bigger part of current society than normal phones were 20 years ago, the techno-horror themes that were central to the original resonate even more strongly today. Despite the misfire that was the remake, there's more than enough compelling ideas in the source material and its sequels to resurrect this underappreciated gem.
