The '80s was a golden age for horror cinema, giving fans the likes of genre heavyweights such as The Shining, A Nightmare On Elm Street, The Thing, and The Evil Dead alongside many others. While some of these classic franchises would be revived in later years, one often forgotten entry from that era which deserves to be brought back to the big screen is Brain Damage.

Helmed by Frank Henenlotter (the filmmaker behind the Basket Case trilogy), this underappreciated cult gem was one of the decade's most bizarre offerings. The plot follows a young New Yorker named Brian who becomes the new host of a brain-eating parasite that injects him with a euphoric, drug-like substance in exchange for delivering it fresh victims. What follows is a hallucinogenic nightmare of gruesome body horror and schlocky, over-the-top violence.

Although this flick has gained a following over the years, its lukewarm reception during its release caused it to go under the radar for most audiences. By mixing stomach-churning gore and devilish black comedy with a provocative allegory for addiction, there's enough substance in this unique premise to resonate with contemporary moviegoers.
