Horror has been an integral part of cinema for over a century. Whether it's the classic monster movies of the 1930s, which gave audiences the timeless depictions of Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster, to the creature feature boom of the 1950s, every decade has been home to a standout example of the genre, dating back to 1896's The Haunted Castle.

One of the most influential, however, is The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari. Released in 1920, the film follows a man recounting his terrifying ordeal with the titular hypnotist and a brainwashed somnambulant named Cesare. What begins as a series of murders descends into a twisted tale of madness and paranoia.

Alongside its chilling twists, the most striking element of this film was its visuals. Part of the German Expressionism movement, each shot is composed of intense shadows and warped set designs, which gave each scene a surreal quality that heightened the atmosphere.

Although a 2005 remake of this film failed to resonate with critics and audiences, Robert Eggers' reimagination of Nosferatu proved that contemporary audiences have an appetite for gothic literature and expressionist influences.

With the right person behind the camera, Dr Caligari could be as incredible today as it was a century ago.
