Alongside Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers, hockey mask-wearing killer Jason Voorhees is one of the most recognisable horror villains of modern cinema. Since making his murderous debut in Friday the 13th Part II, the character has slaughtered his way through numerous sequels, which saw him eventually travel to space in Jason X.

Despite once holding the record for the highest body count for a slasher villain, this horror icon hasn't been seen on the big screen since a mediocre reboot in 2009. While Voorhees' fellow slasher alumni have continued to appear in recent projects, with Krueger rumoured to appear in a new reboot, the killer from Camp Crystal Lake has remained noticeably absent from the scene.

Although Jason's more recent outings were far removed from the horror classics responsible for his initial popularity, the character nevertheless remains a firm favourite amongst horror fans.

With the success of the now-defunct Friday the 13th game and the Terrifier and X trilogies revitalising the slasher genre, Jason's comeback is long overdue. Now that the complex legal dispute over the franchise's rights have been resolved, new projects (including an upcoming prequel series) are in the works. However, it may be some time before fans see Jason's return.
